New research indicated that going to the gym or taking a walk before breakfast on an
an empty stomach may help burn more fat and protect against weight gain.
In a groundbreaking study, Belgian researchers tracked weight loss methods in healthy young adults, exercising at different times of the day while following a diet containing
30% more calories and 50% more fat than usual.
The participants underwent strenuous exercises and a mid-morning routine after eating
breakfast, and the second group did the same exercises but before breakfast.
After six weeks, the researchers found that the men who exercised after breakfast had
gained an extra kilogram and a half each, and developed insulin problems.
But the men who exercised early in the morning, before eating anything, gained almost
no extra weight had healthy insulin levels and burned more fat throughout the day
then the other men.
Peter Heispel, a professor at the Research Center for Exercise and Health at the Catholic
The University of Leuven in Belgium explained that exercising early in the morning prevents
weight gain and stimulates weight loss, and the results of the study confirm that
exercise before breakfast is the best.
Hespel added that the optimal strategy to prevent excess body weight is to combine a
a healthy, balanced diet with a physically active lifestyle.
